Service is an important component of Catholic education – by focusing on the needs of others, students observe how their gifts can benefit the world. It would always give me a strange shiver, our walks to the cemetery on warm summer evenings. We would go to pray. Quite often. And I could never grasp why. Something brought me back to that cemetery today. And here’s the deal: maybe it’s a little unconventional. And there’s probably a more eloquent way to say it. But, perhaps, in the most literal sense of the word, we are called to be losers. The Gospel readings this week make it clear: if we try to save ourselves — our own lives and material treasures — we’ll lose it all in heaven. But! What if instead, we lose our lives on earth for Christ and begin accumulating our treasures at our eternal Home? What a grand life that would be awaiting us! Oh how we would overcome the trap of death! Because, we all know it, our bodies will one day be buried. And at that moment, only our souls will be in the spotlight. Take care of your soul, it is the most important.

Happy Earth Day! ⁣ ⁣Today marks 50 years of Earth Day. ⁣ ⁣Pope St. John Paul II and most recently Pope Francis, have both noted the necessity of a global ecological conversion – a call to be stewards of the earth and thus defenders of human life. ⁣ ⁣In his encyclical, Laudato Si, Pope Francis reflects on the writings of Pope St. John Paul II and writes that, "the destruction of the human environment is extremely serious, not only because God has entrusted the world to us men and women, but because human life is itself a gift which must be defended...authentic human development has a moral character. It presumes full respect for the human person, but it must also be concerned for the world around us and 'take into account the nature of each being and of its mutual connection in an ordered system.'
